I’ve enjoyed robust health and energy all my life, but in 2012 I became worried when I started experiencing daily fatigue, joint pain, a foggy mind, anemia and a patchy, itchy, skin rash. These strange symptoms were negatively affecting my quality of life, relationships, and stamina to do my job. After multiple lab tests returned normal readings, my doctors had no answers and would not investigate beyond prescribing medications that relieved my symptoms but not the root cause. Frustrated, I refused to blindly accept the strong medications they offered. I came to realize that if I wanted to improve my health and get to the underlying cause, it was going to be up to me.
I started to do my own research and soon made the connection between my symptoms and gut permeability also known as "leaky gut syndrome". After spending countless hours reading and researching the latest studies around leaky gut, I discovered that my symptoms were autoimmune in nature and that there was a pathway to getting better! I became even more optimistic when I learned that there are medical doctors who see the value in taking natural approaches to health and wellbeing, an appraoch known as Functional Medicine or Lifesyle Medicine. I also learned that thousands and thousands of people are searching for the same thing and that health can be found by trusting my intuition and insisting on being an active partner with my doctor to find and target root-causes of disease.
Today I manage my health through a functional medicine lens and work with practitioners who listen to me and support my health goals. Together we work proactively to IMPROVE & OPTIMIZE my health. I’m not going to wait for worrisome symptoms to appear, or lab measurements to get out of whack. The strange symptoms I had are now are gone and I’m back to my energetic self, accomplishing more and having abundant joy in the process! I credit my improved health to my “integrative health team”, adopting a gluten-free, whole-foods diet, reducing stress, increasing movement and getting quality sleep. I am so passionate about the role of health in human performance and thriving that I integrated it into my executive coaching practice as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC). I now help my clients by taking a mind-body approach to achieving optimal performance in their professional and personal lives. Let's work together toward achieving the best version of you!
I've read a LOT of books about gut health, the microbiome and their impact on brain health and mental wellness over the years. It's always taken me a long time to get through them becasue of the explanations behind the science. Mental Fitness - Maximizing Mood, Motivation, & Mental Wellness by Optimizing the Brain-Body-Biome is a surprisingly reader-friendly book that doesn't skimp on the science for nerdy types like me!
This book is a quick read and organized so that I can always jump back and forward to review a concept or to reference something I'd like to incorporate for myself or my clients. One of the most valuable chapters is on dietary supplements listing the most effective, science-backed natural supplements for brain-heart-gut axis optimization. I've seen Dr. Talbott speak in person and he has the rare gift of making the nitty gritty science seem so darn fun and interesting! That quality shines in this book and I highly recommend it. No matter what state of health you're in, you will find this book full of practical infromation you can use and super educational.
I was so excited when my Amazon package containing Limitless by Jim Kwik arrived! I was first introduced to Jim Kwik through a webinar I attended as a part of my Functional Medicine Coaching Certification curriculum. He taught us how to remember a stream of points that you need to recall in sequence. For example, when you are giving a speech or presentation. The trick he taught us was amazing! We were able to recall more than 10 specific points, all in proper order and do it again correctly even after a day or two had passed. It was truly phenomenal! I was so impressed that I had to get his book. While I usually listen to my books on Audible, I'm reading the physical book because Jim recommends it and teaches people how to be better readers and how to increase reading speed and retention! He suggests striving for 20 pages per day. That's a pretty lofty goal for me but I'm going to give it my best shot! Stay tuned for a book review!

This book was pivotal in my search for what was causing my auto-immune symptoms and helped me to hone in on the root cause. Gut permeability (leaky gut) and dysbiosis (imbalanced microbiome) - which too few doctors are willing to talk to their patients about as a real condition! Maybe because they can't prescribe anything for eating a fiber and phytonutrient rich diet! I keep this book within reach because I refer to it often.
