I’ve enjoyed robust health and energy all my life, but in 2012 I grew worried when I started experiencing daily fatigue, joint pain, a foggy mind, anemia and a patchy, itchy skin rash. These strange symptoms were negatively affecting the quality of my life, my relationships, and stamina to do my job. After multiple lab tests returned normal readings, my doctors had no answers and would not investigate beyond prescribing medications that relieved my symptoms but not the root cause. I refused to blindly accept the strong medications they offered, and I refused to chock it up to "getting older". I knew that if I wanted to improve my health naturally it was going to be up to me.
I began to do my own homework and discovered a connection between my symptoms and gut permeability also known as "leaky gut syndrome". After spending countless hours reading and researching the latest studies around this, I discovered that I am not alone and that there are medical doctors who see the value in taking natural approaches to health and wellbeing. I became familiar with leading physicians and researchers who are contributing to the growing evidence connecting gut permeability to diseases. Respected physicians like Dr. Alesio Fasano, Dr. Dale Bredesen, Dr. Emeran Meyer, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, Dr. William Davis, and Dr. Shawn Talbott to name just a few. I learned that thousands of people are searching for the same thing I am and that health can be found by trusting my intuition and insisting on being an active partner with my doctor to find root-causes.
As a result, I designed my own path to health and choose to work with functional medicine practitioners who listen to me and support my health goals. Together we work proactively to IMPROVE & OPTIMIZE my health. I’m not going to wait for worrisome symptoms to appear, or lab measurements to get out of whack. Today those strange symptoms are gone and I’m back to my energetic self, accomplishing more and having abundant joy in the process! I credit my improved health to my “integrative health team”, adopting a gluten-free, whole-foods diet, and taking high-quality, natural supplements every day.
As I continue to be an arm-chair student of integrative health, I see amazing discoveries being made in the area of the human microbiome and the gut-brain-axis. Science is delivering overwhelming evidence around how the brain in our head, our gut and microbiome, and our heart are actually three brains that regulate our physical health - including our genetic expression, our emotions and mood states. We are incredibly and far more complex than we ever imagined! The status quo medical establishment seems to be stumbling over its own feet as diabetes, obesity and chronic mental health issues are at epidemic proportions. Cancer, Parkinsons, and Alzheimers diseases continue to ravage our friends and family. There has got to be a better way!
I am so passionate about the role of health in my clients’ success that I’m currently pursuing certification in Functional Medicine Health Coaching from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. Bringing wellness into my coaching practice is logical and necessary if I am to help my clients achieve optimal performance in their professions and in their relationships. I want my clients to have access to wellness coaching because a healthy mind and a healthy body is the only way to achieve a high performance life for all of your life.
I was so excited when my Amazon package containing Limitless by Jim Kwik arrived! I was first introduced to Jim Kwik through a webinar I attended as a part of my Functional Medicine Coaching Certification curriculum. He taught us how to remember a stream of points that you need to recall in sequence. For example, when you are giving a speech or presentation. The trick he taught us was amazing! We were able to recall more than 10 specific points, all in proper order and do it again correctly even after a day or two had passed. It was truly phenomenal! I was so impressed that I had to get his book. While I usually listen to my books on Audible, I'm reading the physical book because Jim recommends it and teaches people how to be better readers and how to increase reading speed and retention! He suggests striving for 20 pages per day. That's a pretty lofty goal for me but I'm going to give it my best shot! Stay tuned for a book review!

This book was pivotal in my search for what was causing my auto-immune symptoms and helped me to hone in on the root cause. Gut permeability (leaky gut) and dysbiosis (imbalanced microbiome) - which too few doctors are willing to talk to their patients about as a real condition! Maybe because they can't prescribe anything for eating a fiber and phytonutrient rich diet! I keep this book within reach because I refer to it often.
